“Don’t Act Like An Elephant!”

Strange statement, isn’t it?

But listen carefully because it can make the difference of success and failure in your business and private life.

So, let me explain…

You might know that in India elephants are used for manual labor. But what to do with them when they are not working? How to restrain them?

Their handlers came up with the idea to program them while they are still very young – by setting self-imposed limits into their thinking.

How does it work?

When the elephants are still small, weighing around 150 pounds, they get tied up with a very heavy rope.

All day long, the elephants try to get rid of it, whine, tug at it and some of them even try to chew it. But they can’t break free. Finally, the elephants give up and the fight is over.

And now it’s getting interesting…

From this moment on, they strongly believe that there is absolutely no chance to get rid of the rope. They accept the “fact” that the rope limits them.

And with this imprinted belief in place, their handlers are able to tie them with extremely small ropes!

And even as adults, weighing 8,000 pounds and more, they never attempt to break free because they “know” they have no chance at all!

As you can see, the elephants’ limits are not real, but exist only in their mind.

And so are we programmed with built-in-boundaries. They are also not real but exist only in our minds.

But with these imprinted belief systems, with these inner boundaries, we are unable…

- to live our lives to the fullest
- to be as successful as we could be
- to set and reach higher goals
- to make 10 times more money as we do now
- to build a successful business
- to get the promotion and pay increase
we always dreamed of
- to fulfill our true dreams and desires

The point is…

Your Inner Belief Systems Will Make Or Break Your Business!

Let me explain this with a simple ‘White Hat’ example…

Let’s say you are at a stage of your online business where you have built a list to a certain size. So far you didn’t promote anything but put your efforts into building a relationship with your list members first by providing great content.

But now you think you are ready to give it a shot. You heard about a great product and that marketers who promote this affiliate product achieve great results. For you it’s a no-brainer to go for it as well.

With your list size you expect ‘realistically’ at least 10-15 sales. You put great efforts in creating a convincing email about the product – you hit the
‘send’ button – and, instead of 10 or even more sales, you make only one.

Depending on your existing inner beliefs one of two things will be happening…

A. If you have any negative beliefs in regards of your business itself or your ability of running a business successfully, you’ll experience thoughts like, “I can’t understand why this is happening to me while everyone else and their dogs are doing great promoting this product; maybe I am simply not good enough to be successful as an Internet Marketer; maybe other marketers have better lists than I; I think the experts were right by telling me that my niche might be too competitive for a newbie to have a chance to make money.” And so on…

B. If your core beliefs regarding your business and your abilities in general are positive, you might have thoughts like, “I expected a little bit more, but hey, at least I made a sale at all; I am really grateful for it; I have accomplished something; I have to tell …(spouse) about my success; I can hardly wait for the next email campaign; I expect even better results next time.” And so on…

A week later there is another opportunity to endorse a good product.
If you were the first marketer (A), you don’t feel that enthusiastic anymore but worry a little about the outcome already, but you still create a rock solid email message – you hit the ‘send’ button – and there are no sales at all from your campaign.

Now you doubt yourself even more. Your feeling of being a failure is deepening. You now really believe that something is wrong with your list. You think you entered your market too late to make any significant profit, etc.

And the worst thing that is happening, you are strengthening your already existing negative belief system! And that will make sure that you’ll go the road leading to more and more disappointments and bad outcomes. And finally you’ll quit and will be convinced Internet Marketing is just not for
you.

A damaging belief, no matter if lying open in your mind or buried deeply inside, will always sabotage a possible positive outcome, no matter how hard you try!

If you were the second marketer (B), you feel great while crafting your endorsement email. You are relaxed and grateful for the chance to make some profit again.

You feel highly motivated, and you expect even better results this time – you hit the ‘send’ button – and (drum rolls, please ) you made 4 sales this time.

You feel even more grateful. Your feeling of accomplishment is deepening. Your self-confidence is rising. And, most importantly, you are strengthening your already existing positive belief that will support you in everything you are going to do from here on.

From this moment on you are on the road to success not only in email marketing but in all areas of your business. Your positive belief, your ability to feel grateful for even small victories (sales) and your positive expectation will get you more and more things, results and circumstances you can be grateful for.

Because it is so important to understand I want to repeat it one more time.

The chances for the first marketer are slim to none to make any significant profit with his/her business. The negative belief system that is controlling his or her life will always sabotage the chance for big, long lasting success.

Bottom line: your perception of yourself is the vital key to your success.It’s because of self-imposed limits. Your inner boundaries will always sabotage true, long-lasting success – no matter what you do, no matter how hard you try.

I can’t tell you how important this is. If you did the work to create a workable plan like I suggested, just follow it!

For example, let’s say you decided that you would use article marketing to get free visitors for your site. Your plan was to write one new article every other day, so you could add a few new ones per week. You’d be surprised at how few people will actually stick to a plan like that. It’s a reasonable plan, and when you think about it, it’s not so hard to get it done. But most people give up after a month (not sure why that’s such a common time period,but it is).

Here’s a practical way to stick to your plan. There are two steps. The first step is deciding that you WILL
do it. I know that sounds insane, since your problem might be that you’re not doing it. But listen, you have to lay down the law for yourself. Tell yourself that your future depends on sticking to your plan. Then refuse to compromise on it.

The next step is to kill the one thing that gets you off track the most…”procrastination”. An easy way to kill procrastination is to figure out which time of the day you work best and schedule your work for that time. Get rid of the distractions and focus for the one, two or three hours a day that you need to keep yourself on track regarding your plan for the year. Procrastination is awful, because it sort of sneaks up on you. If you give in to it, you’ll find yourself letting time slip by without making any progress at all. That makes it easy to get discouraged,which just makes the problem worse. One time I can remember very well was just a couple years ago. I was so insanely busy that I was pretty much neglecting my plan one hundred percent of the time. The problem was, I had made too many commitments to friends and partners. I had promised to do promotions for them,help them on projects and do other things. It was crowding everything else out. By the time I got to “my” work for the day, I was so tired that I couldn’t get anything done. So I had to step back consciously and refocus myself. You might have to do the same. The good news is that once I did refocus,my progress took off.

And speaking of progress…

2. Make Progress Every Day

This is more a matter of discipline than anything else. Albert Einstein reportedly said that anything you study for 15 minutes a day for a year, you’ll be an expert on.

Well, believe it or not, most people won’t even put out that small amount of effort. Part of the problem is the procrastination I just mentioned. But the other part of the problem is not making a commitment to
putting DAILY effort into something. Look, I know you have a life. I’m glad you do! Business isn’t all there is to living. But I can also tell you that if you don’t make DAILY progress, you’ll probably find yourself off track very soon.

Honestly, I’m not sure why this is, but there’s just something magic about making progress toward a goal every single day. It doesn’t have to be huge progress. I don’t even think the size of the progress matters at all. All that matters is that you make a little bit every day.

I can remember back when I was just starting out. I had no experience, and I didn’t know what I was doing. That made it easy to be afraid all the time. That fear kept me from doing even the simple things I DID know I needed to do every day. The result was that I wasn’t making any progress, and I started to wallow in a bit of self-pity. Of course, that made the problem worse.

The single biggest thing I did to fix the problem was commit to spending at least 30 minutes a day on my business. Nothing fancy, just a simple commitment to make progress every single day. When I did that, I felt a TON better about myself, and the progress started to build up.

3. Expand Your Idea Network

This is a HUGE thing, and I have to admit I neglected it for years. Running your own online business can be a lonely thing. You’ll find yourself doing almost all of your work alone, and that tends to isolate you. That’s not healthy, but the more important thing to know is that it’ll kill your business over time. Instead, you always need to find ways to meet more people, read, and educate yourself. That keeps new ideas flowing into your head, which can take your business to levels you can’t even imagine.

The biggest thing you can do is meet more people who are also working online. You don’t have to be a champion networker (although that would help). All you have to do is keep expanding the set of people
you have contact with. For example, I’m having a meeting next week with a few very successful marketers
who live in my area. The purpose of our meeting is to get to know each other better, and to brainstorm
product ideas and partnership opportunities. It’s not a formal meeting at all, but I’ll almost guarantee we’ll come up with some fantastic ways to grow our businesses. For years I didn’t do that kind of thing. I sort of kept to myself, for privacy if nothing else. I was also really busy keeping up with my three daughters.

But I can say from experience that not expanding my contacts 1) Cut me off from meeting lots of great
people I can help, and who can help me and 2) Slowed down my progress towards getting where I am today.

There’s no reason you have to make the same mistake. Get out there and meet some people! If you’ll do that, and you’ll stick to your plan (don’t let other people pull you off into a ditch), and you’ll make progress every day, this year will be awesome for you.

Abe Olandres, the A-list blogger behind www.yugatech.com, graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in 2000 with a degree in Chemistry and Computer Engineering. Although he was named after Abraham Lincoln, in the blogosphere and in IT circles he is better known as “Yuga” – “really now?” or “ows?”, in his native Ilonggo – a name he got when he was the only dormer from the island-province of Guimaras, during his college days at ADMU. Yuga then started his first internet venture in 2003 with a local web hosting business, plogHost. Ever since elementary to high school and college, I’ve considered myself more of an academically-inclined person. Coming into Ateneo for college, I was expecting to excel like I did in elementary and high school. But it was a challenge because I had to choose between my extra-curricular, income-generating activities, because I was supporting myself.

When asked what’s his greatest success?

Being known in the mainstream media as one of the more influential people in the tech biz. In the ACET, my English was very poor. And for a guy who took up Chemistry, I can’t believe I ended up as a pseudo-journalist, as a blogger. I attributed it to due diligence, not to any training in journalism or mass communication.

Brushing Up

* Ironically, motivation to write better came after graduation. Every night, before going to bed, my goal was to write a nice, complete sentence or paragraph.
* Later on, I realized it wasn’t about grammar or composing sentences well. It was about discipline.

Luck Didn’t Make Me A Millionaire

* Around four or five years ago, I was career-hopping, going rounds in companies that I felt I would make a big difference in. So I went with the really small companies, with a lot of start-ups.
* I was looking for a big break. I read Robert Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. He said if you wanted to become a millionaire, add up your salary and multiply it by 12 or 13 months a year, and then multiply it 5 or 10 years. And then, with that figure, ask yourself if you’re okay with that. If not, then what the hell are you doing?
* After I read that, I realized I needed to get out of the rat race. And then I came up with a plan – to raise money to get off the corporate ladder and go out there on my own. I did this three times, and they all failed.
* A lot of people told me I’m not lucky in business. But I said, that’s not true. I’ll do it for a fourth time.

The Beginnings of Yugatech.com

* I realized there was a need in the content industry. Every night, I’d go online and read the news. And I get disappointed every night because a lot of the stories they put up in the InfoTech section wasn’t really anything of interest or relevance to the Philippines.
* I thought, if they can’t give it, might as well get something relevant somewhere. And I thought, why not me?
* From there, I wrote a blog post saying that I would start blogging full-time. I said, if it didn’t work out, I’d go back to the province. But in three months, I was able to turn things around.
* I made a calculated risk. I made sure to calculate my finances. I had timelines, milestones, and goals to meet. With that in mind, you’ll know what to do.
* In three months, I was able to turn my $50 a month blogging into $1,000 a month.

Expanding For Growth

* I realized I could only write so much. So why not expand the business?
* I started representing other bloggers to advertisers, and I get a cut. I put up a business with HAVOC Digital
* When I quit my job, I thought I needed to market myself as a brand. My goal was that in three to five years, I would’ve made a mark.
* All of the earnings I got from advertising, I saved it all and bought a second-hand car. And I posted, “this is the car that blogging bought.”
* I take the craft of blogging seriously. It’s pseudo-journalistic blogging.
* Right there and then, I realized the power of word-of-mouth.

Luck and Superstition

* My grandparents and family were very superstitious. Instead of having a family doctor, we had a quack doctor.
* Coming from that kind of culture and family background, I would always experience culture shock, and would sometimes use this as an alibi when I was having trouble.
* A lot of people in our province are still poor up to now, because they attribute their way of life to luck and superstition.
* Before I entered Ateneo, I said I wanted to cut this kind of culture, that people are complacent because they have been used to this particular kind of life. I felt, you could always change your destiny as long as you fight for it and work really hard for it.
* My mom was an impulsive buyer. She’d splurge whatever my dad made. So I vowed to break that too. I scrimped on my allowance, and would get into a lot of revenue-making activities in school to support myself to augment my allowance

“The Secret” talks about “Ask, Believe, Receive”. Nowhere in that entire movie does it mention WORK.

If I sign up for a clickbank account, the universe isn’t going to magically make my earnings or hack into clickbank and give me sales. I actually have to DO the work.

I totally agree that the Law Of Attraction should be used as a motivational tool that changes the way you work and possibly even the outcome. But without that action, there’s nothing. Notice the word “action” in “Law of attraction”.

I would just like to share to you the current screensaver that I’m using. When launched, it shows hundreds of dollars falling and flowing around your screen. This fantastic screensaver was made by Useless Creations. As of now I’m only using the free version. the only catch with the free version is that the nag-screens appear after few minutes telling you to register the screensaver for only $5. Since I don’t mind with the nagging screens at all, I’m already contented with the free version. It just feels good to see hundreds of dollars flowing around your screen—feels like I’m indeed a money magnet. Now don’t get me wrong though coz I’m into these Law of attraction-type of thing…you know those vision boards and stuff like that. If you need something much more complex and more customizable according to what you want, then may I suggest that you go to Instant Vision Board and see if this indeed meet your needs.
